DANCE STYLES


ballet

Routines having Classical Ballet technique characterized by elegance and detail of movement.  
Pointe Dancer must wear Pointe shoes while executing Ballet technique.  
Pointe entries under 11 years old will not be accepted.


TAP

Technique using percussive footwork that marks out precise rhythmic patterns on the floor.  Tap is an energetic and fun form of dance that focuses on great foot technique, skill and accuracy.


Acrobatic Dance

Routine using a style of dance that combines classical dance technique with precision acrobatic elements. It is defined by its athletic character, its unique choreography, which seamlessly blends dance and acrobatics, and its use of acrobatics in a dance context.
 


Open

Routines can contain any dance combination, which do not fit into any other categories.  A maximum of 5 acrobatic tricks allowed.
 


Jazz

Routines must contain standard jazz technique and performance. No more than two acrobatic tricks allowed.*


Lyrical

Routines should be a combination of classical ballet and modern jazz. It is a passionate dance that tells a story with strong and fluid movements.  No more than two acrobatic tricks allowed.*


MODERN

Routine may have one or more styles of modern technique using specific body movements with use of contraction and release and abstract style.  
 


Contemporary

Routine with fluidity and personal style, not associated with any specific dance techniques.  Dancer(s) must show strong emotional commitment.  May involve balance, floor work, fall and recovery and improvisation with emphasis on the connection between mind and body.  
 


Hip-Hop

Routines to hip-hop music using dance techniques like, popping and locking, street dancing,
and break dancing.  (Spinning on performers’ head is not permitted).   Hip hop is a very modern form of dance with its roots based in street dancing.


Musical Theatre

A routine portraying a character(s) while telling a story.  Lip synching is allowed.  Other styles of dance are acceptable to include.
 


Song & Dance

Performer must sing own vocals while incorporating dance.  No lip synching or lyrics in music.  
 


Vocal

Performer must sing own vocals.  No lip synching or lyrics in music.  
 


Production

Routines with 17 + dancers that tells a story through music and has a theme.  Any style of dance is acceptable.  
• A separate overalls will be awarded.


*Acrobatics: Gymnastic style moves where the performer’s hip go over their head.  Partner lifts and shoulder rolls are exempt from this definition.
